I guess I’ve heard it most of my life: “The South is backwards.” Maybe they’re right. Maybe we are backwards down here, but it’s where my roots have always been planted. There’s a lot that can be said about the South. Some isn’t necessarily anything I’ve ever been proud about, but that isn’t the South I know. Those blemishes aren’t my South. The South I know is where you wave at a stranger because no one is really a stranger here. It’s where Saturdays mean college football and Sundays mean hymnals from an old church pew. And it’s the only place where a man's word and a handshake still mean everything. If that makes us backwards - then I say call me backwards until the day I die.
